Rajya Sabha MP and President of Heritage India Foundation, Shri Vijay Goel led a ‘Heritage Marathon’

New Delhi, 13th Dec 2015: Citizens of Chandni Chowk participated in the “Heritage Marathon” organized by Shri Vijay Goel. Eminent personalities such as MoS PMO Jitender Singh, Mayor Ravindra Gupta, Standing committee chairman Shri Mohan Bharadwaj and MCD Commissioner P.K. Gupta also joined Goel in the marathon. The marathon commenced from Jama Masjid, Police station, Dharampura and ended at Khari Bawli.  The marathon witnessed the participation of hundreds of young tourism lovers and heritage enthusiasts.

Goel said, “There is an urgent need to save the historic walled city of Delhi whose rich cultural and architectural heritage is under serious threat due to unauthorized and illegal constructions”. The effects of these are evident in the decline in the number of people visiting Chandni Chowk.

Shahazhanabad, Old Delhi has nearly 525 havelis that were constructed in that 19th and 20th century. The architecture in these havelis has had the influence of Hindu, Mughal, British and European art. These structures have a lot of tourism potential, yet almost all of them are in a pathetic condition. Despite the government declaring these structures as ‘protected’, no major steps are being taken and only inspector raj is being practiced.

The problems of ever increasing congestion, dilapidated roads and the increasing number of rickshaws in the area have made it a pedestrian averse area. The city, he said is in shambles and there is a dire need to restore the old charm of Chandni Chowk. The civic bodies, MCD and Delhi government have only been holding meetings and discussions but due to their neglect, nothing is changing in practice. The Shahazhanabad Development Board needs to be a lot more efficient in dealing with this menace and should be given more teeth to take any stern steps.

MoS PMO, Shri Jitender Singh said that “There is a dire need to preserve the 400 year old heritage of Chandni Chowk and the marathon is an effective way to draw the attention of young Indians towards this cause.”

Mayor Shri Ravindra Gupta said that “The current condition of Chandni Chowk is such that urgent cooperation is required between the Centre, Delhi government and other related civic bodies to improve things.”

The marathon effectively highlighted the problems in Old Delhi and was symbolic of the need to revive the ever fading glory of Chandni Chowk. It was organized with the support of RWA and local shopkeepers. The conveners of the marathon were Suman Gupta and Jai Prakash and the co – conveners were Ajay Bhardwai, Shyam Singh and Dhruv.
