NEW DELHI: BJP on Sunday said that after it comes to power in Delhi, it will provide electricity at much lower rates than the AAP government.
Reacting sharply to AAP's allegations that BJP will end subsidies on electricity if elected to power, senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Vijay Goel said his party will promote competition between power companies to ensure that the tariffs go down.
"People understand that Kejriwal is not giving subsidies out of his own pocket and is misusing taxpayers' money. We will promote competition between power companies so that the electricity rates go down," Goel said. "Electricity under the BJP government in Delhi will be much cheaper that what the AAP is providing."
With the assembly elections just a few months away, the politics around AAP government's announcement to provide free electricity to households consuming up to 200 units a month has intensified, with BJP calling the scheme as "freebies".
The Rajya Sabha MP alleged that the Kejriwal government was elected to power by opposing the electricity distribution companies but was benefiting them now.
Goel also took out a cycle rally in the morning along with union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi from Ashoka Road to Rajghat to spread awareness against the rising air pollution and Kejriwal government's "inaction" to check it.
He alleged that stubble burning contributes only 10% to pollution levels in Delhi and internal reasons need to be addressed to mitigate the pollution levels.
